Over the summer holiday I was able to spend a whole three weeks on Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. For the first couple of weeks I put my camera away and spent as much time as I could in the water, which wasn’t hard as it was a 2 minute walk from the campground.
For the last week I joined up with fellow photographers Derek Henderson and Tash Hopkins, staying in a rustic house on the other side of the Island. I met up with a man who I had previously encountered about 5 years ago on the Island when I was looking for donkeys (of all things) for a photo shoot. Fortunately for me Micheal and his family were friendly enough to let me roam around their property, camera in hand and also take portraits of them and some of their extended family.

I feel the beginnings of an ongoing project…

Derek is also working on a new book project and I tagged along one day to film him finishing off a portrait series. I’ll release the mini doco once the book comes out later this year.
