Barrier mini-doco

In January 2011 I was over on Great Barrier Island with fellow photographer Derek Henderson, who was finishing off a photographic project about a group of young people that travel to the island each summer called the trees are big and sky is blue… One afternoon I tagged along and filmed Derek shooting the final portraits of the four-year photographic project.

I turned it into a mini doco of sorts:

Karekare polaroids

I went for a hike walk on the west coast with a type 100 Polaroid camera and some old film stock. A welcome respite from digital photography!

RWC2011 opening bonanza

Last night Steve Thomson from WOWstockfootage invited me up to an awesome location to photograph the fireworks over Auckland Harbour which marked the beginning of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. It was an INCREDIBLE spectacle. We could even hear the Finn Brothers playing over in the Viaduct!

Here are a few of my favourite shots.

All Blacks photoshoot – behind the scenes

I’m in the middle of doing portraits of a number of teams for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
Here are some behind the scenes shots from the All Black shoot.

Baldwin Avenue

This is my local train station. I hadn’t taken a look at it since it’s extreme makeover and the fog tonight was the perfect excuse to go and check it out.

Pilot magazine

Images from the Bubbleology photographic series are in the new issue of Pilot. The project is a collaboration between myself and fellow photographer Derek Henderson.

Issue #5 of Pilot is awesome – well worth the $15!

Modesto

Sometimes you come across photographs from your archive and see them with fresh eyes. This is a photograph I took at Modesto Municipal Airport in Northern California in 2007.

Yes, Modesto, a town that doesn’t seem to have moved on in 50 years.

Danny Hiele

This week I was fortunate enough to work along side cinematographer Danny Hiele. Danny is from Belgium but is based in Los Angeles. You might not know his name, but you’ll definitely know some of the music videos he’s worked on: Kayne West, U2 + Greenday, Audioslave, Ngarls Barkley, Fallout Boy, Modest Mouse, Macy Gray….

Danny Hiele

We weren’t quite making cutting edge music videos this time round but it was two days of fun. I’ll be able to post some of the photographs once the campaign launches in the US.

Great Barrier

Over the summer holiday I was able to spend a whole three weeks on Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. For the first couple of weeks I put my camera away and spent as much time as I could in the water, which wasn’t hard as it was a 2 minute walk from the campground.

For the last week I joined up with fellow photographers Derek Henderson and Tash Hopkins, staying in a rustic house on the other side of the Island. I met up with a man who I had previously encountered about 5 years ago on the Island when I was looking for donkeys (of all things) for a photo shoot. Fortunately for me Micheal and his family were friendly enough to let me roam around their property, camera in hand and also take portraits of them and some of their extended family.

I feel the beginnings of an ongoing project…

Derek is also working on a new book project and I tagged along one day to film him finishing off a portrait series. I’ll release the mini doco once the book comes out later this year.

A day with the ABs

Had a fun day shooting a print advert for Sky Sport with All Blacks Rene Ranger, Piri Weepu and Cory Jane showing us their skills.

The boys at Brandspank put have together a great concept for a new Rugby Channel TVC which will have to be seen to be believed.

Check out the TVC here.

Ridley Scott’s Life in a Day

This was a nice surprise.

Film maker Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Alien, Blade Runner) has used some of my footage in the promo for an upcoming project Life in a Day. The back-story to the footage is that we had freakish lighting storm in Auckland last year which I filmed from my home, which I contributed to the footage library wow!stockfootage.

Here is the full clip:
